# What is the difference between cognitive and affective empathy in Empatyzer?

In Empatyzer, cognitive empathy means understanding another person’s perspective, needs and way of thinking, while affective empathy means automatically sharing or resonating with their emotions. The Empatyzer assessment covers both as separate aspects.

Affective empathy is more closely linked to temperament and usually responds less to direct training. Cognitive empathy can be developed, so Empatyzer puts particular emphasis on it: understanding what the other person may see, need or hear differently, then checking that understanding in the real conversation.
